5-Day Kilimanjaro Climb on the Marangu Route

Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Classic Marangu Route

The Marangu Route, famously nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro trail that provides hut accommodations, allowing trekkers to sleep in beds instead of tents. Its gentle slopes and long history make it the most established path on the mountain.

This five-day trek takes climbers to the summit and back along the same trail. While the terrain is relatively mild, the compressed schedule leaves little time for altitude adjustment, creating a climb that is physically straightforward but still challenging.

For hikers confident in their ability to acclimatize, Marangu offers a quick and rewarding ascent of Uhuru Peak, with landscapes that shift from lush rainforest to stark alpine desert and a stunning sunrise at Africa’s highest point.

Tour Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, the starting point for Kilimanjaro adventures. Later in the evening, you’ll have a meeting with your mountain guide for a full briefing and equipment check. The rest of the day is yours to relax, rehydrate, and get mentally prepared for the climb. Overnight stay in Moshi.

Accommodation: Budget, Midrange, or Luxury in Moshi Town
Meal Plan: Dinner

Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where registration with the park authorities takes place. From here, the trail leads you into the enchanting rainforest—alive with the calls of tropical birds, the sight of playful blue monkeys, and the shade of ancient fig trees. The path is gentle but steadily climbs, offering a peaceful introduction to the mountain.

After about 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mandara Hut, a welcoming base set within a forest clearing. For those with extra energy, an optional short hike to Maundi Crater reveals sweeping views of the surrounding plains.

Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Distance: 12 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Today’s trek takes you out of the lush rainforest and into the moorland zone, where the scenery transforms dramatically. The trail opens up to rolling heath and grassy slopes, scattered with striking giant lobelias and groundsels. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

As the altitude rises, the pace slows—“pole pole” (slowly, slowly) is the mantra to help with acclimatization. Be sure to stay hydrated and soak in the beauty of this ever-changing landscape.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where a hearty meal, breathtaking mountain views, and a comfortable rest in shared huts await.

Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

Leaving Horombo, the trail ascends into the stark beauty of the alpine desert zone. This dry and exposed landscape is almost barren, with little vegetation but vast, open views that showcase the raw power of Kilimanjaro’s environment.

The path crosses the Saddle, a broad plateau stretching between the jagged peaks of Mawenzi and the towering bulk of Kibo. The terrain is hauntingly beautiful and offers a sense of isolation and grandeur.

Although the climb is gradual, the altitude makes the hike physically demanding. By mid-afternoon, you’ll arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703m), where you’ll have time to rest and prepare your gear for the summit push. After an early dinner, it’s straight to bed to conserve energy for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
